End of Chapter One
The cold room smelled of old furniture, dust and stale cigar smoke. I opened the doors and windows to let in some fresh air. I couldn’t believe nothing had been remodeled. The big wood stove was still in the kitchen along with the moss green Sears refrigerator. On the cabinet was a microwave, a little old, but it worked and that was all that mattered for now. I heated a can of chili and marveled how quickly the spicy dish renewed my energy and made me more optimistic about spending the night in this old house.
I decided to park the car in the garage before settling in, but was disappointed to find that all the doors and windows of the garage were locked and the keys weren’t hidden in any of the usual places. As I started back to the porch to look for the keys in the house, I was surprised to see I had company. A large white cat sat in the corner, bathing herself. I wanted to ignore her, but every time I looked in her direction, I was transfixed by the stare of her slanting yellow eyes. When she let out a threatening meow, I hustled back into the house to continue my search for the garage door keys.
As the keys were nowhere to be found, I went outside again, locked the car and brought the luggage into the house. Much to my relief, the white cat had disappeared.
It had been a long day. The harvest moon was rising, illuminating the countryside with a pale warm glow. The idea of sitting on the porch and sipping a glass of wine was very appealing for soothing my aching heart.
